4th Grade Teacher Ashley Quick-Hooker Honored by BRMA

Our very own 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Quick-Hooker has been recognized by the Blue Ribbon Mentor Advocate, (BMRA) a program of the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City School, for her great spirit of volunteerism.

Granvel Johnson, New Match Support Specialist with BMRA contacted Principal Sharpless to share appreciation for Ms. Quick-Hooker's dedication and work that she has performed with the group.
Celebrating more than 20 Years of Excellence, Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate (BRMA) is a Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools support program designed to improve the achievement of male and female students of color. BRMA provides students with mentoring, advocacy, tutoring, social and cultural enrichment, as well as college and career information. It also provides opportunities for volunteer community service for their mentor/mentee pairs.
Ms. Quick-Hooker shared her experience, talking of the commitment she has honored beginning four years ago. She will continue mentoring her student through high school as her mentee enters college providing guidance and support, acting an extra trusted adult, a sounding board - another person whom the mentee knows is "in her corner".

Ms. Quick-Hooker offered that her involvement includes two hours of contact per week in the form of conversations via email, text and phone, cultural experiences, and BRMA group-sponsored activities. BRMA offers summer tutoring, scholarship opportunities, and college tours. Ms. Quick-Hooker shared some of the favorite activities she and her mentee have enjoyed - grape picking, basketball games, cultural and holiday events like painting classes, and the Christmas Carol.

Northside Elementary 3rd Grade Students participate in Martin Luther King Celebration

Students insert their insights to Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" Speech

Students were invited to participate in this year's Town of Chapel Hill's celebration event on January 12, 2018 to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day.  Students in our 3rd grade classrooms painted beautiful letter-by-letter collages quoting Dr. King and were offered to insert their feelings about important words in the historic phrases offered by Dr. King in his famous "I Have A Dream" speech.  You may find the full celebration on the Town of Chapel Hill's Facebook page. Our very own Principal, Coretta Sharpless was the featured keynote speaker.
